Hippocratic Oath Or Hypocricy? Doctors at Crossroads.

Book- Hippocratic Oath Or Hypocricy? Doctors at Crossroads.
Author- Anita Bakshi
Publisher- Sage Publications
Pages- 204

“I go near the bed and see him, so perfect in his body but so flawed in its functioning. God’s ironies are not for us to question.
I reach out for that plug.”
Dr. Anita Bakshi, the Author of this book, is a prcatising Paediatric Intensive Care Specialist at Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi. In this book she speaks about the profession of Medicine, that how greatly respected that profession was and still is but she also throws light on the changing Doctor-Patient relationship. She talks about the time when there weren’t much life saving technologies or drugs and the doctors’ struggles to save their patients and then she talks about how everything developed but there weren’t enough hands to care. This book is extremely well-written and the narration is immensely beautiful. What makes this book an even more amusing read are the numerous anecdotes from Dr.Anita Bakshi’s life. She talks about how the patients put a great deal of hope and faith in them, how much they respect the doctors. However, over the years, this relationship between doctors and patients has suffered a lot. And this deteriorating doctor-patient realtionship in our country, India is of serious concern. Every other day there’s news about doctors and not for all the good reason. In this book, Dr.Bakshi has used her experience of 3 decades, from a medical student to an experienced paediatrician, providing an insider’s view to highlight serious issues- demanding patients, prescribing of unnecessary investigations, hospitals run like business, the roles of big pharmaceutical industries and so on from the point of view of both doctors and patients. This book doesn’t just shows the sinking doctor- patient relationship but also the hardships and struggles being a medical student and then a doctor brings into a person’s life, the immense pressure they are constantly subjected to, no routine life, call for duty at any given time, their dedication to uphold their patients belief and hope and most imporatntly to save the life at hand. This is one of the most wonderful books I’ve read till date and I’d definitely recommend this book to everyone so that we can gain some pretty good knowledge on the ongoing debate by the doctors and public on ethical practice of medicine.

Simran

Book- Simran
Author- Rajesh Talwar
Pages- 257

“I once saw a religious painting in a bookstore of a child playing, with a huge black cobra poised in the background, watching and protecting the child. It reminded me of her. The snake was the temper in her that allowed Simran to preserve her child-like, good-natured innocence.”

Simran by Rajesh Talwar is one such book which should’t be judged by its cover. Extremely intriguing from the very first page this book contains such contents that I could hardly fathom from the blurb. John, a lecturer in philosophy at Delhi University, returns to his flat one evening to find a letter waiting for him. A subsequent meeting with the author of the letter leaves a question mark over the supposed death of John’s fiancee, some years earlier.
This book contains diverse subjects stringed together to form a heart-warming as well as a heart-breaking tale. John was an orphan and later came to stay with his foster parent, Eliot. Eliot had a great impact on his life. Eliot’s sexuality had an even greater impact on both their lives, being discriminated and doubted of ‘socially degrading’ actvities, when John lost his foster parent, the only family he had, he vowed to do something to honour Eliot. Later, John grows up to work with the hijra community. This part of the book where John is always ready to help and stand by the hijra community shows the gratitude and respect he has for everyone irrespetive of their sexual preference is really heart touching. This book throws light on how people with varied sexualities are treated in our ‘developing country’, because of the so called societal norms and prejudices. The friendship that Sonia and John had was so great, I totally adore that part.
This book also has Simran’s story, her life and how she was discriminated against because she was a woman. She was expected to get married as soon as possible and leave her education. But she rose as a rebel, fought with her parents and didn’t even budge against all the pressure put by her parents and went ahead to do her Masters. Then there was Simran’s sister who went ahead with their parents wishes and got married, and what happened next in her married life changed her for the better.
The Author has done a great job with the narration and the writing style was really engaging. There were some parts about philosophy which kind of bored me since I’m not into that subject. The cover page could have been much much better. The characters were very beautifully described and overall, this book was an amazing read.

Musings And More

Book- Musings and More
Author- Gunjan Shah
Publisher- Bluerose Publishers
Pages- 30

The Author talks about how unpredictable our life is, that how important it is to live our life to the fullest every moment, the promise of a lover to be there for his love, of nightmares and of one-sided love, of a lost friend and his poetic affair and a lot more that we can relate to. The poems are written in both Hindi and English. These poems are made up of a journey of long lost emotions, of longing and of love, of destruction and the need to live and love. I quite liked the Hindi poems and I believe the English poems were quite simple and could have been executed better. Overall, it was an one time short read.

A conversation with Gunjan Shah, author of Musings and more, published by Bluerose Publishers.

1. Tell us about yourself: Based in Mumbai, I am a 21 year old Mass Media Graduate, who is looking forward to making his name in the Field of Content Writing, Technology Journalism and Music. I am currently pursuing M.A in Communication and Journalism from Kishinchand Chellaram College, Mumbai, and planning to pursue further education in the field of Music Production and Composition from UK or USA. It can be stated that I breathe on Music, consume the latest and the greatest about tech everyday, and write and create content as my daily cycle of work.

2. If not being an author, what was your dream in life: Everything that I currently do are connected to each other and provide me with some or the other option to do something productive in my life, such as Music, as with Music, I am able to connect to a mass audience with the help of something that seems to be a talent for them, but is only natural to me, as I love to be around people who learn, practice and create music, which in the process also makes me learn, practice and create some music of my own. Similar is the case with Journalism or Content writing, the niche that I work on is something that I have been practising and working on so much that now all of it feels like a habit, and one so important that it seems lonely without all of it. So when it comes to my dream in life besides being an author, then my dream is to continue doing all the stuff that I do, and while doing so, someday earn my name in those fields somewhere down the line in future.

3. Who do you attribute your success to: There is a long list when it comes to speaking of the people who I attribute my success to, but to cut it short, I attribute my success to my elder Brother the most as he always helped me achieve what I never could, though sometimes through some tougher options, and also helping me with the monetary requirements, then I would attribute my success to my Parents and my Family, as it was only due to their constant belief in me and the support that they always gave me, that I am what I am right now, in all the things that I am doing in my life. My friends have also played a strong a constant role in my entire journey, so they also deserve to be attributed to my success as it was due to their constant taunts and neglections that I could produce the best possible version of my work. And lastly, I would like to attribute my success to all the people, events and things that were a part of my life, as it was only due to all that, that I am a Published author, and I had inspiration and reason to create content for the book.

4. Any Message you would like to give to your readers: Everyone is not as lucky as I feel right now, there are bunches of youngsters and even some people from the older generations who regret it as they couldn’t continue to learn, practice or showcase their art at the right time due to family, peer and social pressure. Being lucky to have a supporting family, peer group, and society, I feel it is of utmost importance, that no matter what faculty you are studying or what profession you are pursuing, you should never kill away your dreams ad hobbies, you should always take out sometime and indulge yourself in stuff that you love to do, it is the best moral support and the best feeling that can be experienced. And to the parents that might read, Please Stop Pushing your kids into a race for the best profession, in the modern world, there is no such thing as the Best Profession, every profession is unique and special in its own way, and is incomparable to the other counterparts. Just know that, in your pushing your child into a race of the best profession, be it because of your own will, peer pressure or due to social pressure, you also kill an aspiring artist, or a dreamer just because you think that it’s not the best profession, who knows, 20 years down the line, if you had supported your child in the hobbies that he/she had and let them focus to make their hobbies into a career, they would have turned out to be the best in Business! Thank You!

5. Who or What inspired you to write the Book: To be honest, there are loads and loads of places, people or instances that can give you inspiration to do anything and everything in the world, right from resolving to lose weight upto fighting for what is right. So is the case with me, my Book “Musings and More” is an anthology of Hindi and English poems, and it has been inspired by many things such as mere thoughts of the end of the world, my friends, the society around me, etc, etc. thus for my book as well as everything else in the world, every moment, every thing, every thought, and every person can prove to be an inspiration to make a change or create something extraordinary.

Author Interview of Ayaz Kohli for ‘Snakes In The Meadows’.

#AuthorInterview

#SnakesInTheMeadows has been authored by Ayaz Kohli. There’s a story, a background behind this impactful and soul shuddering tale, some experienced and some collected from the tormented souls of those fateful days in the Paradise of Earth.

1. Introduce yourself for your readers.

I am Ayaz Kohli – an author by passion and a Civil Servant by profession. Snakes in the Meadows is my debut novel.

2. What/Who inspired you to write this book?

Many circumstances and persons, including my father who himself is an author of the vernacular. Primarily this book is inspired from some actual happenings in Pir Panjal region of J&K. In particular, the plight of one remote village and, of course, its resilience inspired me immensely to write this book.

3. How did it feel to write about your own district, the place you were born ?

It was like reliving the same story, again and again. While writing it, I experienced a medley of emotions- joy, nostalgia and, at times, deep pangs of helplessness over certain things that can’t be fixed.

4. Jammu and Kashmir has always been in a state of conflict, so illuminate your readers about your childhood days.

Snakes in the Meadows juxtaposes the peace time with the conflict laden one. When we were kids, our parents would, occasionally, narrate to us the horrible tales born out of Indo-Pak partition. Back then it felt like the apocalypse had already happened and we should have been thankful and sympathetic to our forefathers for having endured that dread. No one knew that another dread was in the waiting, ready to unleash itself, not just to be narrated but to be lived.

5. How has been your journey as a writer?

It has been one long and arduous journey. It took me a decade to write this book, and another couple of years to get it published. But, now, considering the accolades that my work is getting, I feel that those years and efforts were well invested. The response my book is getting is tremendous. I feel elated.

6. Which is your favorite character from your book and which character was the most difficult one to portray?

I have worked hard, to the best of my capabilities, to develop the characters of my book. Each of them represents a unique identity and idea. There are no personal favourites, but if I have to name one, it would be Ashwar. It’s her rousing words that resonate through the book, “Someone will tell a better story of how you died rather than you telling your children how you lived.” And that ‘someone’ is me. That’s how I find myself as an unmentioned character in the book.

7. Any message for your readers?

Many messages, indeed! For now, all of them are in my book – Snakes in the Meadows. Read them all, write back to me and stay in touch.
Yours truly.

Snakes In The Meadows

Author- Ayaz Kohli
Publishers- Rupa Publications
Pages- 278

“You must take care of your family. That is the most important Jihad for you! Don’t look for Jannat Al Firdaus elsewhere, it’s right under your mother’s feet.”

Misery, pain, longing for a peaceful life, scarred souls, fear of death, exploitation and rape. The dwellers of Pathri Ali were living life worse than the deepest holes of hell, in the ‘Paradise of Earth’. Disguised as saviours for the cause of Jihad, the Mujahideen (militants) robbed the residents of Pathri Ali of their simple and content lives. Fed with the wrong idea about Jihad, young lads from different parts of Kashmir (India Occupied) and Pakistan were lured with money, forced and threatened to join the group of militants.
.
.
.
Bearing the torture and injustice of the Mujahideen to the point where their backs were bent, souls were bruised, families were killed, women were raped, children were inflicted with horrors for life, the need to live, the struggle to strive took birth in the hearts of Pathri Ali dwellers. They called their sons to come back from the distant lands, they joined hands to make the whole village a large family to protect and preserve each other’s life, to fight and to win back what’s rightfully theirs !
.
.
.
.
With a soul shuddering tale, the Author, who himself hails from the Jammu and Kashmir brings into light what the people staying in the ‘Paradise of Earth’ have to go/had been through. There were instances which’ll send chills down your spine and make your senses go numb. The characters were absolutely beautiful. Albeit a little confusing due to quite a few subplots, the narration was undeniably good.

A Year Of Wednesdays

#BookReview

Book- A Year Of Wednesdays
Author- Sonia Bahl
Pages- 280

A Year Of Wednesdays was an amazing read for me ! Such witty narration, humour that wouldn’t just make you laugh, but would also make you wonder how gorgeous this journey is going to be ! This book is going to leave an everlasting impact on you. The characters were such that they’ll carry you with them on their journey, their talks, emotions, past and present will make you feel as if they are your own, you’ll laugh with them, you’ll cry with them, take sides and miss them once the story is over, after you’ve read that last note. The note which would make you believe in ‘ichi-go ichi-e’, would make you want to hug the book and cry, would leave a feeling of longing in you wanting to live a little more with them, cherish the memories and give them a piece of your heart.

“They met on a Wednesday in November. And she believed Wednesday comes in a halo. Nothing bad can happen on Wednesday.”

7B, that’s her seat number and she desperately wished for seat number 7A to be unoccupied so that she could rest with her baby. But then came the occupant of 7A, a hotshot WallStreet guy. Too fresh for a post-midnight long-haul flight !
They talked through their 15 hours long journey that began with midflight turbulence and a baby in need of diaper change. Contrasting views, subtle sarcasm, secrets revealed, aspirations shared, comments passed, meaningless banter, everything changed forever and a year of Wednesdays.

Author Interview Of Hemant M. Kulkarni For ‘The Inquisitive’.

#AuthorInterview

The Inquisitive has been written by Hemant Mahadeo Kulkarni The Author was kind of to answer some of my questions. Thank you so much Sir for the amazing book and interview.

1. Introduce yourself for your readers.

I have worked at Sea for over forty years and have utilized my spare time in honing my writing skills. I write in three languages viz. English ,Hindi and Marathi. I am also into poetry in all three languages and I am passionate about my poetry.

2. What/Who inspired you to write this book?

A small incident narrated by my friend few years back in Mumbai turned out to be a germ for this novel.

3. How difficult or tricky is it to maintain the mystery quotient while writing a thriller ?

Yes, to some extent it’s challenging as one has to ensure that the reader doesn’t get a clue about what’s going to happen next. And therefore one has to think from the point of a reader at every step.

4. How difficult is it to write individuals with so different characters and keeping it constant throughout the book with an air of mystery around them ?

Having spent such a long time at sea, I have come across dozens of peculiar personalities which remained engraved in my mind. And some of them became the characters in my book. It was just a matter of adding some spice to those characters.

5. Which character was the most difficult one to create ?

I wont say difficult, but the Glen’s character was a bit challenging and also very interesting to build up.

6. After writing a thriller which other genre would you like to explore, and why ?

I love thrillers and for the time being I plan to stick to them. My next novel “The Justicer” is also going to be a thriller with a nail biting excitement.

7. How has been your journey as a writer ?

I have been writing since my school days and I have covered poetry, lyrics, short stories, movie stories, novels and also movie scripts. By the way another of my book “Dil ki Nazar se” which has a lovey Hindi/Urdu Shayari was published from New Delhi recently. Thus on the whole it has been a very enriching journey for me.

8. Any message for your readers ?

Also do read my previous thriller about hijacking of a ship which is also on Amazon “Crimson Dawn…hijacked off Aden”. You will love it too.

The Inquisitive

Book- The Inquisitive
Author- Hemant M. Kulkarni
Pages- 174

Mohit’s mother always said, because of his inquisitive nature Mohit would someday land himself in a heap of trouble. Mohit and his wife Monica had just moved to Mumbai, when he came across his old friend Glen, the one whom his father had forbidden Mohit to meet or stay in touch with. Because, Mohit’s father believed Glen was the harbinger of trouble in his son’s life. Meeting after years, Glen took Mohit on a ride to Paradise Tower. And that’s where the trouble began !
.
.
.
How would you react if you discover that your neighbor’s innocent looking daughter is into flesh trade ? And how else would you react if you come to know that your wife has chosen the same ‘innocent looking neighbor’s daughter’ to be your brother’s wife ?
.
.
.
The Inquisitive by Hemant Kulkarni is a very thrilling story. With a character like Mohit, who is more inquisitive than a little kid, there’s always trouble on the next page, ready to pull Mohit into a place of no return. The pace was a little on and off. Albeit the whole story made me curious to find what’s going to happen next, the climax didn’t match my expectation. Even though the story ended on a happy note it felt as if the mystery wasn’t solved, atleast that’s what I felt. Each character was beautifully crafted, the air of mystery was always present throughout the story. The language used, writing style, narration, everything was good. I liked how the relationship between a father and son and the importance of family was shown. Overall, it was indeed a thrilling read.
